I have owned and burn 1, Kindle 2, so I'm already committed to the basic idea: e-ink reading in a thin form factor with excellent connectivity huge selection of books and subscriptions. I have come to rely on my Kindle experience, and to seriously improve their reading.

DX is not a clear upgrade for me, but two features me over the edge: larger screen, a native PDF reader. I now have the DX in my hands, and can report the pros, cons, and neutral:

Pros:

- Larger screen is definitely a plus. I use a larger type size on my Kindle 2 (old eyes), and the type size to get far more text per page on the DX. This makes the whole experience of reading more books like (and should be a boon for people who buy large print books.)

- The screen is sharper and clearer than my Kindle 2 in side-by-side comparison: the text is darker and the contrast is much better, making it better visibility in the overall standings.

- On a side note, a larger screen and allows you to read poetry to ignite, even at large sizes species. In earlier kindles, a smaller screen cut off the line, so you will lose the feeling when the poet completed the line. On the DX, you can see the full range of exactly how the poet meant, with the cut-off to the right place.

- PDF reader works as advertised, and is extremely convenient. PDF documents appear on the DX exactly as they do on the computer screen. In addition, you can drag and drop documents directly to the device via USB cable (or use-a-fee e-mail if you absolutely must.) The only drawback: at least for the documents that I now can not adjust the type size as I with the light source documents.

- Rotate the screen also works as advertised: it works as a slight zoom on both graphics and text, and offset some downside of not being able to adapt typesize to PDF documents. A nice design touch: the four-way navigation stick presented to the Kindle 2 is sensitive to rotation, and will move in line with expectations in relation to the rotation of the screen.

- More space is devoted to the device screen, while the white plastic border around the screen seems to have shrunk, and generally in relation to the proportion of plastic screen on 2nd Kindle I like this (but see below on the keyboard).

- Storage: I like the increase in storage space, and do not mind the lack of external memory card. I see some people have problems with this, but only those people who either a) regularly has to deal with some PDF documents, totaling more than 3.5 GB of space or b) have almost 3500 books regularly at hand. I fall into neither category.

Cons:

- Price: It is expensive, as you can tell pretty quickly. If the value of larger size, a native PDF reader, and features may justify a 30% premium you pay for DX via Kindle second In truth, the DX should not cost more than Kindle 2, and 30% of the premium is not unreasonable. But for my money, Amazon would drop the price of Kindle 2 to $ 300 or so, and charge $ 400 or less for the DX. However, I bought it, and will keep it at that price.

- Single buttons for navigation: all the buttons are now on the right side, and no one on the left. I am a Righty, so I should not complain, but I found myself using both sides of the Kindle second Lefties have reason to complain, I think.

- One hand operation: I often read while I walk with my Kindle in one hand, and something else in my other. Due to the layout, it will be harder on the DX.

- All metal surfaces: I miss the tacky rubber backing on my first burn When I put my hair in a light area, has remained in place. Not so my Kindle 2 and now my DX. This objection is not specific to DX, but it's still there.

Neutral (ie, things that are worth mentioning):

- Weight: DX is harder, noticeably so. This is only a matter of if, like me, regularly use Kindle with one hand. . . even so, it's still doable.

I owned the K1 and K2, and then love them both, so I'm really looking forward to DX. My plan was to use DX at home, and keep my K2 to carry with me the whole of creation. It was not long, however, after my DX arrived the day before yesterday before disappointment set in.

Do not get me wrong, there is a lot like the DX:

1) The pictures are awesome at it, if the publisher format them correctly.

2) Those who complain about the darkness of the text on the K2 (I never had a problem, btw) will be delighted DX very dark text.

3) the ability to rotate the screen is great. Gives you a closer look at things such as maps and charts.

4) The browser is a little faster than the K1 or K2, but it does not say much - it is still very clunky to use.

5) However, the website looks pretty good on DX.

6) There are 3500 books.

BUT ..... DX just is not all that. These deficiencies, which actually makes me think sending it back before my 30 days are:

1) First and foremost, and it is true that natively read PDF, it's really just a PDF viewer * *. You can change the font size on the PDF links will not work on them, and the ability to zoom does not work on them either. So, better to have large fonts to PDF before being charged. Looking at the PDF in landscape mode helps a little but not much.

2) DX is too large to hold comfortably. It's not really all that difficult, but it is top heavy and you feel pull on your hands. And it's really obvious if you try to use to pull the keyboard while holding it - you're almost set DX down flat, it becomes so difficult to type.

3) They are connected with key QWERTY keys (the loss of the line keys). What genius thought that the development would be helpful and "fixing" the need to press the ALT key every time I wanted to write code??

4) Before you came to my DX, I really do not think it would bother me at all, but I must say I really hate the fact that the "next page" button is only on one side. I mainly use the left button of the hand. And yes, the DX rotation abilities you can turn upside down, placing the "next page" button on the left .... However, once you do, the button is so high that you slide your hand (no thumb, your whole arm) in order to turn the page. It may sound nit-picky, but it is really asking to stop reading to do. Not only that, but it has a keyboard on top makes it even more cumbersome than if the right side up!

5) when you rotate the DX so that the horizontal, "next page" button was on the bottom or the top - in any case you can not just flick your thumb and change the page. Again, he asks.

6) If you leave the rotation feature to "Auto" when not using DX drains the battery, so you have to remember to turn off the feature when you stop reading.

Firmware Update from 11/30/2009:

I am now the M-Edge platform jacket for the Kindle DX (genuine leather - Pebbled Navy) - Back to School Sale! because you can set light to stand alone at the table next to you or circle the table. This makes it easy to browse music, knitting patterns, or just a plain book (problem some users complaints about "too difficult" to hold comfortably).

I was disappointed that the light automatically goes to sleep after 5 minutes, because if you use the Kindle for reading patterns or music, this time on you while you are still "working" on the page. However, Amazon has come out with new firmware release ... DX light now stays on for 20 minutes before going into screen saver mode which is great progress.

In addition, the new firmware, you have the option of converting to PDF format on the Kindle format - which should address the lack of "Zoom" and "observation" has - at least there is a workaround for now.

UPDATE from 6/16/2009: May be ignited only literally saved my career and saved my "backend". I had an interview yesterday and thought I knew where I was going.
